About Cadmium

Cadmium is a soft, bluish-white metallic element with the symbol Cd and atomic number 48. It is naturally associated with zinc ores and is generally recovered as a by-product of zinc refining rather than mined as a primary metal. Cadmium has a relatively low melting point, good corrosion resistance, and useful electrochemical properties. Commercial material is supplied in refined metal forms for battery, coating, alloy, pigment, and electronic applications.

Production Process

Cadmium Production by Zinc Refining : Cadmium is commonly recovered during zinc smelting and refining. Zinc concentrates are roasted and leached, causing cadmium to concentrate in flue dusts, residues, or process solutions. The cadmium-bearing material is purified through leaching and precipitation steps, often using zinc dust to separate cadmium from the solution. The resulting cadmium is further refined by electrolysis or distillation, then melted and cast into commercial metal shapes or other required forms.

Industrial Uses

Cadmium is used mainly in rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries, where it provides reliable performance across repeated charge cycles. It is also used in corrosion-resistant electroplating, specialty alloys, pigments, and selected stabilizer applications. The electronics and energy sectors use cadmium compounds in semiconductors and cadmium telluride thin-film solar cells. Aerospace and defense components may use cadmium coatings where strong corrosion protection and dependable performance in demanding environments are required.
