Coal India output decline tightens supply
Coal India's quarterly production fell while power demand grew, straining availability. Rising mining costs and higher e-auction realisations point to continued upward pressure on coal prices.

War in West Asia disrupts LNG supply through the Strait of Hormuz, forcing economies to increase coal-fired power generation. This surge in demand is tightening the coal market and pushing prices upward.
Calcium sulfite, the inorganic calcium salt of sulfurous acid, is valued as a reducing agent and oxygen scavenger across water treatment, pulp and paper processing, food preservation, and gas scrubbing. It is most closely tied to flue gas desulfurization (FGD), forming when sulfur dioxide from coal-fired power generation reacts with limestone or hydrated lime, which keeps its cost linked to sulfur and calcium feedstock dynamics and to the power and heavy-industrial sectors that generate and consume it.
Through H1 2026, calcium sulfite pricing carried forward the firm-to-stable tone set late in 2025. Elevated sulfur costs continued to support production economics and discouraged aggressive discounting. Asian material stayed range-bound, with steady power-generation and scrubbing demand met by cautious, need-based buying that left inventories balanced. European prices carried a firmer undertone, reflecting sulfur feedstock strength and compliance-driven costs, with periodic plant maintenance intermittently tightening supply. North American material stayed comparatively stable, supported by dependable domestic FGD output, even as energy-cost swings introduced occasional short-lived movement.
Downstream demand remained dependable rather than buoyant. Consumption from water purification, paper manufacturing and emissions-control applications offered a consistent baseline, but the absence of a strong cyclical upswing in construction or manufacturing kept buying disciplined. With firm feedstock costs on one side and measured demand on the other, the market stayed balanced through the half.
Analyst Insight
According to Procurement Resource, calcium sulfite prices are expected to hold a stable-to-firm footing through the remainder of 2026, with sulfur feedstock costs and the seasonal cadence of FGD and industrial demand the primary forces shaping the trajectory. Buyers are expected to retain a cautious, requirement-led approach, leaving the market range-bound barring a shift in energy costs or environmental policy.

Asia
Calcium sulfite prices in Asia recorded a slight increase during Q4’25. The demand for the product, particularly for the power generation and industrial sectors remained steady, mainly for flue gas desulfurization (FGD) applications. The supply remained tight, mainly because of the availability of gypsum and other calcium-based raw materials. Producers maintained normal operating schedules, but some stockpiles were drawn down faster than usual as companies prepared for local holidays and winter demand. Overall, the Asian market reflected balanced trading, with cautious purchases and modest upward price movement.
Europe
The European market experienced a slight increase in the prices of calcium sulfite during Q4’25. The prices of sulfur were increasing, which affected the production of calcium sulfite. The prices of calcium sulfite slightly moved upwards as some of the manufacturers were cautious while selling the product. The demand for calcium sulfite from power plants, industrial scrubbers, and fertilizer plants was steady, although not high enough to increase the prices of the product. The export of calcium sulfite was moderate.
North America
In North America, the prices of calcium sulfite were stable throughout Q4’25. Demand for the material from energy plants using FGD systems and other industries was consistent. Domestic supply was able to meet the majority of the demand, which kept the prices stable. Although fluctuations were experienced due to energy costs, the majority of the buyers purchased the material based on their immediate needs rather than bulk purchases. The market was stable throughout the period, with a slight increase at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
Calcium sulfite has a sulfurous odor and high solubility in water with a yellowish color. The compound finds applications in a variety of industrial processes, such as water treatment, food industry, and gas scrubbing sectors. It has the ability to act as a reducing agent antioxidant and also helps in controlling sulfur dioxide emissions.

This process involves scrubbing of flue gas obtained from coal with limestone. Limestone or hydrated lime acts as a source of calcium while flue gas provides sulfur dioxide, and thus, on reaction, they give calcium sulfite as the main product.
