Asia

In 2025, the Asian CAPB market remained fundamentally supported by robust demand from the personal care, home care, and detergent sectors. Demand growth across India, China, and Southeast Asia was driven by increasing consumption of sulfate-free shampoos, liquid soaps, and premium cleansing products incorporating mild surfactants such as CAPB. Market conditions were influenced by fluctuations in coconut oil and palm kernel oil derivatives, the primary feedstocks used in CAPB production, as weather-related disruptions and tightening vegetable oil supplies periodically affected raw material availability. Manufacturers also faced growing sustainability and traceability requirements from downstream customers, prompting greater focus on certified and responsibly sourced feedstocks. While regional production remained adequate, procurement activity strengthened during the second half of the year as buyers sought to secure supply amid uncertainty surrounding feedstock markets and global shipping conditions. Overall, the market was characterized by healthy downstream demand, periodic raw material volatility, and increasing emphasis on sustainable sourcing.

Europe

The European CAPB market maintained a firm outlook throughout 2025, supported by resilient demand from the cosmetics, personal care, and household cleaning industries. Consumer preference for mild, biodegradable, and naturally derived surfactants continued to encourage CAPB adoption in premium formulations. Regulatory focus on sustainable ingredients and environmentally responsible supply chains remained a key market driver, leading manufacturers to prioritize certified raw materials and lower-carbon sourcing strategies. Import dependence for coconut- and palm-based feedstocks exposed the market to global supply fluctuations, while elevated operating and compliance costs continued to influence production economics. Despite broader economic uncertainty across parts of Europe, demand from hygiene and personal care applications remained stable, helping maintain balanced market fundamentals and supporting long-term consumption growth.

North America

In North America, the CAPB market experienced steady growth in 2025, driven by sustained demand from personal care, household cleaning, and institutional hygiene applications. The continued shift toward clean-label, sulfate-free, and plant-based formulations supported CAPB consumption across major consumer product categories. Supply conditions improved relative to previous years, supported by stable imports of key feedstocks and more efficient logistics networks. However, market participants remained attentive to developments in global coconut oil and palm kernel oil markets, as weather-related supply constraints and changing trade flows occasionally affected feedstock availability.

About CAPB (Cocamidopropyl Betaine)

CAPB or Cocamidopropyl betaine, a mixture of closely related organic compounds, is a fatty acid amide. It is extracted from dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA) and coconut oil. In appearance, it is a pale-yellow coloured viscous solution. Cocamidopropyl betaine is widely utilised as a surfactant in personal care products as it is mild in nature.

CAPB (Cocamidopropyl Betaine) Production Process

  • Production of CAPB (Cocamidopropyl Betaine) via Reaction of Dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA) with fatty acids

CAPB is produced in two steps, where the first step utilises a reaction between DMAPA and fatty acids, particularly obtained from coconut oil or palm kernel oil. This results in DMAPA’s selective addition, transforming primary amine present in it to amide. Finally, the remaining tertiary amine in DMAPA is reacted with chloroacetic acid to produce a quaternary ammonium centre, thus giving out CAPB.
