Carboxymethyl Cellulose Price Trend for the First Half of 2022

During the first quarter, the prices of carboxymethyl cellulose increased throughout the Indian domestic market due to the robust demand from the pharmaceutical industry. However, the prices in the Chinese market were on the lower side due to the low demand from the construction and mining sector. An oscillating price trend for carboxymethyl cellulose was recorded in the Asian market during the second quarter. The price of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (the most common variety) with 55% purity averaged 4800 RMB/MT during the first half of 2022.

The price of industrial-grade sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (purity 60-99%) averaged 26500 RMB/MT in the Chinese domestic arena. Similar price trends were seen in the European and American domestic markets. Initially, the prices surged owing to the robust demand from the home improvement sector and high upstream costs; however, the prices stabilized towards the end of the second quarter.

About:

Carboxymethyl cellulose, a derivative of cellulose, is a cheaper, nontoxic, biodegradable, and renewable polymer. CMC containing carboxymethyl groups is generated via the reaction of cellulose with chloroacetate in alkali to produce substitutions in the C2, C3, or C6 positions of glucose units. It functions as a modifier, retains water, and is an excellent film former. These attributes make it an ideal choice as a bio-based hydrocolloid. CMC is water soluble and more amenable to the hydrolytic activity of cellulases.

In the process of alkali-catalyzation, CMC is produced by the alkali-catalyzed reaction of cellulose with chloroacetic acid. During this step, a product mixture containing CMC and salts is obtained, and this mixture is further subjected to purification to get the desired product.
