In the Asian market, the prices of silicon and methyl chloride surged owing to supply constraints, high freight charges and trade restrictions. Silicon traders hoarded the metal rather than selling it at lower prices, causing prices to inflate. The silicon prices averaged 3208 Ex-Shanghai in China. However, the prices of silicon and methyl chloride relaxed towards the second quarter due to the renewed production by the domestic industries after the removal of covid restrictions.

The price of feedstock methyl chloride averaged 4307 RMB/MT. Similar price trends were recorded in the European and US domestic market. The feedstock prices surged during the first quarter due to the supply constraints; however, the prices plateaued and stabilized towards the end of the second quarter as the upstream costs relaxed amid the looming speculations of a global recession. Nonetheless, the prices of chlorosilanes like trimethylchlorosilane and dimethyldichlorosilane are likely to witness healthy growth in the coming years owing to the increased efforts of silicon manufacturers to use different types of chlorosilanes for manufacturing solar-grade silicon. The solar industry's rapid growth will augment the chlorosilane market revenue for solar-grade silicone.

Chlorosilanes are substances in which silicon has additional bonds to hydrogen and/or alkyl groups as well as one to four chlorine atoms. Hydrogen chloride fumes that are toxic and corrosive are produced when chlorosilanes interact with water, moist air, or steam. Additionally, they might release H2, a flammable gas. They can act as agents for chlorination. As bases and both organic and inorganic acids interact with chlorosilanes, toxic or flammable gases are produced.
