Asia
In China, the prices of Coal Tar Pitch decreased from ~USD 793/MT to ~USD 732/MT, respectively, in the first and last month of the second quarter of 2026, showing around 7.6% decrease. Asian coal tar pitch markets were stable during early months of the year and weakened during Q2 as lower coal tar feedstock costs reduced production support. However, supply tightened again later as coal-tar deep-processing operations declined and producers increased feedstock procurement. Demand from carbon materials remained support. India also strengthened downstream capacity as Himadri commissioned its first high-purity anode-material facility with a 200 MTPA initial capacity, supporting future coal tar pitch consumption.
Europe
European coal tar pitch markets remained stable during Q2’26 as balanced demand conditions offset mixed industrial activity. Aluminium-sector consumption provided steady support for anode-grade pitch used in carbon anode production, while weaker steel-linked demand limited stronger growth. EU crude steel production during January-May reached 54.4 million tonnes, down 1.5% year on year, reducing support from coke-based industries. Higher energy, logistics and compliance costs helped maintain producer pricing, while stable aluminium demand prevented significant weakness.
North America
In the United States, the prices of Coal Tar Pitch were ~USD 880/MT in April and ~USD 887/MT in June, showing a marginal increase. North American coal tar pitch markets remained supported by stronger steel and aluminium activity during Q2. Carbon pitch realizations had weakened earlier in H1, but improved industrial conditions provided some recovery support. North American crude steel production increased 5.9% year over year during January-May, supporting the wider coke and carbon-material chain. Continued aluminium activity also supported demand for anode-grade pitch.

Coal tar pitch is mainly used as a binder in carbon anodes for aluminium smelting and in graphite electrodes used by the steel industry. Other important applications include refractory products, carbon blocks, carbon fibers, roofing materials, impregnation of carbon components, and selected surface coatings. Its ability to form a strong carbon structure after heat treatment makes it useful where high-temperature performance is required. Aluminium smelting remains one of the principal industrial consumption areas for coal tar pitch.
Coal tar pitch is produced by distilling crude coal tar recovered as a by-product of metallurgical coke production. The coal tar is heated in distillation equipment, separating lighter fractions including light oil, naphthalene-containing fractions, and anthracene oils according to their boiling ranges. The heavy, non-volatile residue remaining after distillation forms coal tar pitch. Producers can further control heat treatment, filtration, and finishing conditions to obtain grades with suitable softening points and properties for aluminium, graphite electrode, and specialty applications.
