Coated 1S paper price trends exuded an optimistic outlook during the first quarter of the year 2024. In the Indian market, the selling prices took marginal upticks across the three months. Various factors contributed to this positive price performance of the coated 1S paper. The first half of the quarter was marginally positive compared to the latter half. Internationally the consumption was attributed to a positive demand trajectory, especially from the posters, brochures, and packaging industries.

Global trade disruptions also had their role to play in inclining these selling prices. Trade disruptions and the difficult shipping situations upsurged the production and manufacturing costs unsustainably high. Shipping in the Suez Canal decreased by 50%, while through Panama Canal dipped by 32% owing to the drought-like conditions. In the latter part of the quarter, the market demands showed regular trajectories, but the rise in feedstock wood, lumber, and energy costs elevated the prices.

About Coated 1S Paper

Coated one side (C1S) paper refers to a type of paper that has been coated with a layer of material, typically clay or other minerals, on one side. This coating enhances the paper's smoothness, brightness, and printing properties, making it ideal for various applications in the packaging and printing industries.

C1S paper is commonly used for labels, tags, packaging materials, and advertising materials such as posters and brochures, where high-quality printing and visual appeal are essential. Its versatility, durability, and ability to showcase vibrant colors and sharp images make it a preferred choice for a wide range of commercial and artistic projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

The coated 1S paper outlook remains tied to wood pulp and energy costs, which set the floor for producer pricing, alongside packaging, labelling, and commercial printing demand. Sustained Asia Pacific consumption and a recovery in Western advertising spend are the key upside drivers, while limited new capacity continues to underpin a firmer stance. Softer wood pulp or energy costs, or a pickup in new capacity, would ease producer margins and moderate prices.

Wood pulp and energy costs are the central drivers of coated 1S paper pricing, since elevated input costs keep producer cost structures firm and limit downward price adjustment. Resilient downstream demand from packaging, labelling, and e-commerce fulfilment provides consistent support. Southeast Asian producers tend to moderate output when cost pressure rises, tightening regional supply balance, while seasonal promotional cycles and organised retail growth in India and China sustain consumption.

Asia Pacific dominates both production and consumption of coated 1S paper. Japan's Nippon Paper Industries and Oji Holdings, Indonesia's Asia Pulp & Paper, and India's JK Paper are key regional producers, with Southeast Asian mills also supplying export volumes. China and India drive the largest consumption through packaging and retail growth. North America is served by Twin Rivers Paper, Dunn Paper, and Verso Corporation, while Europe relies on Sappi, Lecta Group, and Stora Enso alongside imports. Western markets are net import-dependent, creating supply concentration risk centred on Asia Pacific output.

Coated 1S paper is a manufactured product produced by applying a clay or mineral coating to one side of a paper base, with wood pulp from forestry as the primary raw material. As a manufactured product rather than a harvested crop, it has no planting-to-harvest calendar; supply instead follows mill operating rates and forestry input availability, with wood pulp and energy costs and regional producer output decisions shaping the underlying supply-cost balance.

Packaging and labelling are the primary downstream drivers, supported by consumer goods activity and e-commerce fulfilment channels that favour high-quality printed substrates. Advertising and commercial printing also contribute, with order activity tied to broader economic and marketing spend cycles. Together, these end markets keep procurement demand consistent and support a moderately firm pricing tone.

Acreage and yield figures do not apply to coated 1S paper, since it is a manufactured paper product rather than an agricultural commodity. Supply conditions are instead reflected through producer output and capacity utilisation: limited new capacity additions and Southeast Asian producers moderating output in response to elevated wood pulp and energy costs tend to tighten regional supply balance. This measured supply, combined with resilient packaging and labelling demand, generally supports a moderately firm price stance.

Procurement Resource assesses coated 1S paper prices through a structured, data driven methodology. Primary engagement with producers, suppliers and traders is combined with secondary market data, continuous monitoring of feedstock and input costs, trade-flow and inventory tracking, and exchange or spot benchmarks. All inputs are validated and translated into a transparent price assessment and outlook. The detailed methodology is available on the Procurement Resource website.
