Cryolite prices observed very short-ranged fluctuations during the second half of the year 2023. Cryolite prices averaged around 7850 RMB/MT in July in the Chinese (Henan) domestic market. These prices went to around 7700 RMB/MT in December’23, reflecting the confined nature of the market oscillations.
The primary factor keeping these prices within limited boundaries was the dull demand; since the market demands tottered at the lower end, the prices didn’t have much room to grow. Even though the feedstock aluminium oxide prices inched up during the later part of the final quarter, the feverish demands from the downstream steel and welding industries kept the cryolite prices in check.
Cryolite is a colourless white mineral with a pearly lustre and an ice-like appearance. It is softer but denser than quartz, with a refractive index similar to that of water. It is used in aluminium production, bonded abrasives, and glass and enamel industries and has many more applications.

Cryolite is produced from secondary aluminium dross. Secondary aluminium dross is first pretreated, or water washed, followed by a pyro-hydrometallurgical process to remove silicon impurities and extract the aluminium component, which further undergoes carbonation to give cryolite.
