In 2025, global ferric chloride market conditions varied by region, with water and wastewater treatment continuing to provide the principal source of demand. In Asia, the market remained soft for much of the year as adequate domestic production and restrained procurement from water-treatment and printed-circuit-board sectors weighed on sentiment. Lower or stable raw-material costs and weaker construction-linked demand further limited producer leverage. European markets also experienced a cautious environment, as consumption from municipal treatment and industrial processing remained steady but moderate, while sufficient regional supply encouraged buyers to optimise inventories. In North America, conditions were comparatively firmer toward the end of the year, supported by regular municipal water-treatment procurement, industrial wastewater requirements, and infrastructure-maintenance activity. Across all regions, ferric chloride demand remained structurally supported by water-quality compliance, although market direction was shaped by local supply availability, industrial activity, and procurement timing.

About Ferric Chloride

Ferric chloride is a crystalline solid with a dark colour and the chemical formula FeCl3. It forms a brownish-yellow solution in water due to its high solubility. Because of its potent acidic qualities, ferric chloride is frequently utilized as a coagulant in the purification of water and wastewater to extract contaminants. It is also used as a catalyst in organic synthesis and as an etching agent in printed circuit board manufacturing. Ferric chloride can irritate skin and mucous membranes since it is corrosive. It can be used in a variety of industrial processes to help remove impurities and treat effluents because of its capacity to hydrolyze in water.

Ferric Chloride Production Process

  • Ferric Chloride Production by Chlorination of Iron

In this pathway of synthesis of ferric chloride, dry chlorine is reacted with iron metal at elevated temperatures in the range of 500-700 C. At optimal pressure conditions, this reaction yields ferric chloride as the final product.
