About Ferromanganese

Ferromanganese is an iron-manganese ferroalloy used mainly in steelmaking. Commercial grades typically contain a high proportion of manganese together with iron, carbon, silicon, and small amounts of other elements. It is sold as high-carbon, medium-carbon, and low-carbon ferromanganese, depending on steelmaking requirements. Manganese improves steel strength, hardness, toughness, and wear resistance, and it also helps control sulfur and oxygen during refining, making ferromanganese an important bulk alloy for steel producers.

Production Process

Ferromanganese Production by Submerged-Arc Furnace Smelting : Ferromanganese is commonly produced by reducing manganese ore with carbon in a submerged-arc electric furnace. Manganese ore, coke or another carbon reductant, and fluxes are charged to the furnace, where high temperatures reduce manganese oxides and form a molten iron-manganese alloy. The metal is tapped, separated from slag, cast, cooled, crushed, and sized. Medium- and low-carbon grades can be made by refining high-carbon alloy or by silicothermic routes that limit carbon pickup.

Industrial Uses

The main use of ferromanganese is as an alloying and refining addition in carbon steel, stainless steel, structural steel, rails, automotive steel, and wear-resistant grades. Manganese raises hardness, tensile strength, and abrasion resistance, while reacting with sulfur to reduce hot-shortness during rolling. High-carbon ferromanganese is commonly used in bulk steel production. Medium- and low-carbon grades are selected when tighter carbon control is needed in specialty steels, welding materials, and foundry applications.
