About Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber

Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber is a high-performance synthetic elastomer produced from nitrile butadiene rubber through selective hydrogenation. The hydrogenation process improves heat resistance, oxidation resistance, ozone resistance, oil resistance, and chemical stability. HNBR retains the oil and fuel resistance of NBR but offers better durability under high-temperature and demanding operating conditions. It is widely used in automotive, oil and gas, industrial machinery, aerospace, and sealing applications where conventional nitrile rubber may not provide enough long-term performance.

Production Process

Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber Production by Selective Catalytic Hydrogenation of NBR : Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber is manufactured by selectively hydrogenating nitrile butadiene rubber. NBR is first produced from acrylonitrile and butadiene, generally through emulsion polymerization. The NBR polymer is then dissolved in a suitable solvent and treated with hydrogen gas in the presence of a precious metal catalyst under controlled temperature and pressure. This reaction saturates the carbon-carbon double bonds in the butadiene units without affecting the nitrile groups.

Industrial Uses

Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber is used in O-rings, seals, gaskets, timing belts, fuel system seals, oilfield packers, hoses, diaphragms, shaft seals, compressor seals, hydraulic seals, automotive engine components, aerospace sealing parts, drilling equipment, industrial rollers, and high-performance molded rubber components.
