Soybean futures fell 5-6 cents on Monday, pressured by lower crude oil after a US-Iran peace deal. Export sales are behind pace, while bearish speculative positioning hit a record. Traders await NOPA crush data for further direction.
Lecithin is a fatty substance found in the cells of many plants and animals. It is a type of phospholipid that is essential for the cells' membranes. Lecithin is commonly extracted from oilseeds like soybeans and sunflower seeds and is used extensively in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries. Therefore, the lecithin price trend is usually in close alliance with the feedstock oil seeds like soybean and sunflower.
Lecithin prices began on a weaker note at the start of the first quarter of the year 2024. With a depreciation in oilseeds markets the lecithin prices were found wavering at the lower end of the price curve for the majority of the said period. In the US market, there was a noticeable decline in average monthly prices from January to March. This decrease was largely owed to the oversupplied inventories.
The US lecithin industry saw a rise in soy crushing volumes, which boosted the availability of lecithin, exerting downward pressure on its market value. Concurrently, demand remained relatively weak, further influencing the downtrend. Additionally, a rapid drop in the prices of feedstock soybeans also contributed to the lower lecithin prices during this period. Overall, the market performance for lecithin was subdued during the early months of the year.
