Asia

In Q4’25, the Asian chloromethane market exhibited a mixed trend. In the Chinese market, prices were slightly lower in Q4’25 compared to the previous period. The demand for major downstream industries, including refrigerants and pharmaceuticals, was sluggish, particularly after the peak summer season. During this time, buyers did not make any new purchases, instead choosing to rely on existing stocks. On the other hand, the supply of chloromethane in the Chinese market remained steady, and the supply was sufficient. In other Asian countries, including South Korea, the market environment was largely stable in Q4’25. During this time, manufacturers operated at normal rates, and trading activities were normal in the Asian market. Overall, the Asian market exhibited a range-bound to slightly soft trend in said quarter.

Europe

The prices of chloromethane in the European market remained stable during the fourth quarter of 2025. The supply of chloromethane was adequate, and there were no significant disruptions in the production process. The downstream markets' demand for chloromethane was moderate but not high. The buyers' strategy was cautious due to the volatile economic conditions and purchased chloromethane for immediate needs. The overall trading activity was moderate, and there was no significant spot market activity observed in the market. The overall market sentiment was described as stable and calm, which was not observed earlier in the market during this period.

North America

In the North American market, the prices of chloromethane remained flat throughout Q4’25. Here, the production levels were controlled, and the inventory levels were sufficient enough to cater to the local demand. In addition, the demand from the end markets remained moderate, with no signs of increased demand. On the export side, the demand remained subdued due to flat-to-declining demand from the other markets, which impacted the prices. Overall, the prices remained stable, with no major changes throughout the quarter.

About Chloromethane

Chloromethane is an organic molecule which is commonly known as methyl chloride, Refrigerant-40, R-40, or HCC 40. It is a colorless, odorless, and combustible gas that belongs to the haloalkane. Although it is rarely seen in consumer items, methyl chloride is an important reagent in industrial chemistry and was once used as a refrigerant.

Chloromethane Production Processes

  • Chloromethane Production from Methanol

Chloromethane is commercially generated by processing methanol with hydrochloric acid or hydrogen chloride, by processing a combination of methane and chlorine at high temperatures, a lower quantity of chloromethane is created.

Frequently Asked Questions

The chloromethane outlook remains tied to refrigerant and pharmaceutical sector demand against a backdrop of controlled production and adequate regional supply. Asia tends toward range-bound to slightly soft pricing when post-peak-season demand softens, while Europe holds stable on adequate supply and cautious buying, and North America stays flat on controlled production, sufficient inventories, and moderate export demand. The key swing factor is whether refrigerants and pharmaceutical sector demand recovers; without that, a flat trend tends to persist.
Downstream demand from refrigerants and pharmaceuticals is central to chloromethane pricing, with sluggish demand, particularly after peak seasonal periods, tending to lead buyers to draw down inventories rather than place new orders. In Europe, volatile economic conditions can prompt buyers to purchase only for immediate needs, suppressing spot activity. In North America, controlled production and sufficient local inventories tend to meet moderate demand, while soft external demand can weaken export opportunities.
The chloromethane market is shaped by key producers including Occidental Petroleum Corporation (North America), AGC Chemicals (Japan), KEM ONE (France), Gujarat Alkalies and Chemical Limited (India), and Nouryon (Europe/North America). China and South Korea are significant producing and consuming markets with steady output and normal trading activity. India features as both a producer via Gujarat Alkalies and a major downstream consumer, while Europe and North America generally show adequate supply with moderate, cautious buying.
Chloromethane is produced via a catalytic vapor-phase process in which methanol reacts with anhydrous hydrogen chloride; the resulting vapors pass over a gamma-alumina catalyst bed at high temperature to yield chloromethane. An alternative route combines methane and chlorine at elevated temperatures, though this generates a lower volume. The finished product is then used as a methylating agent for methylcellulose and quaternary ammonium salts, a solvent for butyl rubber polymerization, and a precursor to dichloromethane, chloroform, and dimethyldichlorosilane for silicone production, as well as a reagent in pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis.
Silicone production is the primary demand driver, as chloromethane is a key precursor for dimethyldichlorosilane, linking its consumption to construction, automotive, and consumer goods activity. Agrochemical and pharmaceutical sectors drive demand through chloromethane's role as an intermediate for methylene chloride and chloroform. Butyl rubber manufacture and petroleum refining also contribute. When refrigerant and pharmaceutical buying in Asia softens alongside moderate European and flat North American offtake, overall demand tends to stay soft and prices range-bound.
Procurement Resource assesses chloromethane prices through a structured methodology combining primary engagement with producers, suppliers and traders, secondary market data, continuous monitoring of feedstock and input costs, trade-flow and inventory tracking, and exchange or spot benchmarks. All inputs are validated and translated into a transparent price assessment and outlook. The detailed methodology is available on the Procurement Resource website.
