Octadecylamine Production by the hydrogenation reaction. The process begins with the chemical reaction between stearic acid and ammonia through a liquid phase reaction at a high temperature of 350 °C. The reaction results in the ammonisation of stearic acid and gives octadecane nitrile as an intermediate product. The intermediate is further hydrogenated on heating in the presence of a metal catalyst such as nickel and yields octadecylamine as the final product.
