Pectin Price Trend H1 2024
Pectin, a soluble gelatinous polysaccharide, is extracted from citrus fruits and is primarily consumed in the food and pharma industries. During the first half of the year 2024, the prices showcased a mixed trend depending upon regional supply and demand dynamics. At the beginning of the year, prices were steady in the Asian markets in the early first quarter. As the quarter progressed, the prices turned southwards because of a combination of many factors like high inventories, reduced downstream demand, and cautious procurement. A slight recovery was seen at the shift of quarters.
The supply was adversely affected in many parts in the second quarter. The climatic effects reduced the yield and compromised the quality of raw materials and source agriculture commodities. This made the extraction of Pectin difficult as the availability of feedstocks was lowered. Apart from this, citrus production faced another challenge because of the Huanglongbing (HLB) disease. During the said period it affected the plantations in the U.S.A., Brazil, and China.
The plants affected by the disease showed poor juice quality, reduced fruit size, and tree mortality. This all affected the supply of citrus fruits, which in turn affected the production of Pectin. Additionally, high freight charges and limited product availability disrupted the supply of the commodity. Geopolitical issues such as the Israel-Gaza war and the Red Sea crisis added to the logistical challenges. Therefore, some price inclines for pectin were seen in Asia and the USA at the beginning and end of the second quarter. However, the general market trend remained buoyant for the most part.
