Plywood sheathing, a structural panel made by bonding multiple softwood veneer plies under adhesive pressure for cross grain stability and load bearing capacity, is used across residential homebuilding, commercial construction, roofing substrates, wall framing, flooring underlayment, and concrete formwork. Pricing is governed by timber availability and energy costs on the supply side, while demand tracks housing market health, lending conditions, and construction investment sentiment.
Through H1 2026, plywood sheathing prices traced a cautiously firming path, supported by gradual improvement in residential construction across select markets after an extended period of weakness tied to elevated financing costs. In North America, a measured easing of mortgage rate pressure contributed to a modest recovery in housing starts, supporting panel procurement by homebuilders and contractors. Canadian and US producers held balanced output against this slowly improving backdrop, and the absence of oversupply underpinned price stability. Timber input availability stayed manageable across major softwood producing regions, though energy and labour costs restrained any sharper correction. In Europe, recovery stayed hesitant as France and Germany navigated prolonged housing weakness and cautious developer sentiment, while Asia Pacific was more active, with building programmes in Vietnam, India, and Indonesia sustaining consumption.
Analyst Insight
According to Procurement Resource, plywood sheathing prices should firm gradually through H2 2026, with meaningful recovery contingent on sustained improvement in residential construction and continued normalisation of lending conditions across key consuming markets. Timber cost stability and the pace of European housing recovery are the main swing factors.

Plywood Sheathing prices witnessed downward pressure in the second half of 2025 due to the sustained lack of activity in the construction sector in key consuming countries. New residential starts in key countries in the European region remained subdued and lower than those required to support significant plywood sheathing demand. This was dur to sustained high finance costs and underlying development sentiment. The subdued nature of construction activity in countries such as France and Germany has also affected overall plywood sheathing offtake. Also, in terms of offtake, plywood sheathing saw some support from concrete formwork and commercial construction markets. However, this has not been sufficient to counterbalance the overall decline in residential market offtake. From a supply side perspective, plywood sheathing producers managed their output in response to the underlying low-consumption environment. Despite these adjustments, cost pressures relating to energy inputs and timber raw materials continued to shape production economics throughout the period.
Plywood sheathing is made up of several thin wood veneer layers, or plies, that are glued together and have the wood grain of the neighboring layers rotated up to ninety degrees. Increased strength, stability, and resistance to shrinking, warping, and cracking are all benefits of this cross-graining method. Because of its reputation for structural integrity, plywood sheathing is frequently used in building projects like flooring, wall siding, and roofing. It provides outstanding resistance to moisture, load-bearing capacity, and durability, guaranteeing long-lasting performance in a range of environmental circumstances. It is additionally available in different grades and thicknesses to meet specific building needs and can be treated to boost fire resistance.

In this multi-step process, softwood logs are first peeled into veneers. The veneers then undergo a lathering process and are stacked upon each other using phenol-formaldehyde adhesive. This piled-up stack is then pressed, trimmed, and sanded to give the finished product.
