Evonik is expanding downstream processing at its Fermas site in Slovakia for biosurfactants and pharmaceutical ingredients, adding commercial output. The capacity increase raises available supply of these specialty chemicals, likely putting downward pressure on prices.
Evonik expects Q2 2026 adjusted EBITDA of €600-650mn, up from €509mn a year ago, driven by higher sales volumes and higher prices. Supply chain disruptions affecting Asian competitors provide temporary pricing and availability support; however, the effect is expected to weaken later in 2026 as global shipping stabilizes. Full-year EBITDA outlook raised to €2.0-2.2bn.
Throughout the majority of Q1’24, the potassium acetate market displayed relative stability following earlier fluctuations. Initial fluctuations were attributed to the variations in demand patterns in the early winter months when the cost support was weak and seasonal changes within the market itself exerted stress.
These variations stemmed partly from the Chinese New Year and spring celebrations, which led to a temporary decline in industrial activity in the region. The situation was compounded by significant losses in exports to Europe and the U.S., caused by disruptions in the Red Sea route and extended shipment times.
In Europe, the market dynamics were similarly turbulent, heavily influenced by ongoing conflicts in Russia and Ukraine, which stifled trading activity and dampened demand from the downstream sectors. Reduced offshore trade suppressed the overall consumption, despite sufficient existing inventories to meet the subdued demand, leading to a generally downward pressure on prices.
In North America, the potassium acetate market experienced quick shifts, particularly noticeable in the first half of the quarter, which saw more pronounced fluctuations, while the latter half sought more stability amidst these ongoing challenges.
