Rayon yarn is a regenerated cellulosic yarn made from purified cellulose, commonly obtained from wood pulp. In viscose rayon production, the cellulose is chemically converted into a soluble intermediate and then regenerated as continuous filaments. The finished yarn has a smooth feel, good drape, high moisture absorbency and strong dye affinity. Depending on spinning and finishing conditions, rayon yarn is supplied in different deniers, filament counts, twists, lustres and dyed or undyed forms.

Purified cellulose pulp is steeped in sodium hydroxide, pressed and shredded to form alkali cellulose, which is aged under controlled conditions. It is reacted with carbon disulfide to form cellulose xanthate and dissolved in dilute sodium hydroxide to make viscose. After filtration and deaeration, the viscose is extruded through spinnerets into an acidic coagulation bath. The regenerated filaments are stretched, washed, desulfurized, dried, finished and wound into rayon yarn packages.
Rayon yarn is used in apparel fabrics, linings, dresses, scarves, embroidery and decorative threads because it provides softness, lustre and fluid drape. It is also used in curtains, upholstery, carpets, rugs and other home textiles. Higher tenacity rayon grades serve selected technical applications, including reinforcement products and tyre cord. Textile manufacturers value rayon for its dyeability, moisture absorption and ability to blend with cotton, polyester and other fibres.
