Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) Magnet Price Trend Q1 2026

  • SmCo magnet market sentiment stayed firm in Q1’26 as rare-earth supply controls and cobalt availability risks tightened procurement across major regions.
  • Feedstock pressure came from export controls on samarium materials and cobalt quota limits, while Hormuz disruption raised freight and energy risk.
  • Downstream demand remained steady from aerospace, defense, electronics, and high-temperature motor applications, where material substitution remained limited.

Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) magnet markets remained firm during Q1’26, supported by restricted rare-earth feedstock movement, cobalt supply controls, and steady demand from high-performance industries. In Asia, China’s controls on samarium alloys, compounds, metals, and oxides limited the availability of critical feedstock for magnet producers. Cobalt availability also remained constrained, with Congo’s export quota set at 18,125 tons of contained cobalt for the rest of 2025 and up to 96,600 tons per year in 2026 and 2027, including 9,600 tons for strategic reserves. Europe and North America stayed exposed to Asian rare-earth and magnet supply chains, while aerospace, defense, electronics, and high-temperature motor users continued need-based procurement. In the latter part of the quarter, the Iran war and Strait of Hormuz closure added logistics pressure, as shipping through the route remained disrupted, and the strait normally carries around 20% of global oil supply.

Analyst Insight

According to Procurement Resource, SmCo magnet markets may remain firm in the near term if samarium controls and cobalt quota limits continue. Any easing in rare-earth export movement could reduce procurement pressure.

We have been working with Procurement Resource for over two years now. These guys can provide data for any market in any country. I have given them numerous challenging assignments to work upon and have been quite impressed with their approach and results.

Large Indian Conglomerate and a known FMCG Brand Procurement Manager

When we started our Betaine manufacturing operations in Brazil, we were struggling to identify suppliers and benchmark our procurement costs vs other players already in the market. Procurement Resource helped us understand the market in Latin America, the key suppliers, how others were getting products, and even helped us in negotiating prices.

Global FMCG GiantDirector (Manufacturing)

I would like to recognize quality of work done by your team on VIP (Value Improvement Program) for Purplle Private brand Packaging portfolio. Your team helped us in identifying right suppliers, collected Vendor related data, floating inquiry, price comparison+benchmarking. This has helped us achieve a significant cost saving.

Production Process

Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) Magnet Production by powder metallurgy, where samarium and cobalt alloy is melted, crushed into fine powder, pressed in a magnetic field, sintered at high temperature, heat treated, machined, and magnetized to obtain the required magnet shape and strength.

Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) Magnet Industrial Uses

SmCo magnets are used in defense systems, aircraft components, missiles, radar equipment, motors, actuators, industrial equipment, electronics, medical devices, renewable energy systems, and high-temperature applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

During Q1 2026, SmCo magnet prices were generally firm, supported by stronger demand from defense, aerospace, and industrial automation sectors. Upstream feedstock costs for samarium oxide and cobalt rose, tightening margins for producers and contributing to higher offers. Price firmness reflected broad rare earth cost pressure.
The 2026 outlook for SmCo magnets remains positive due to sustained demand in high temperature and mission critical applications. Renewables, aerospace, and defense sectors continue to rely on SmCo where alternative magnets cannot match thermal or corrosion resistance. Investment in supply diversification and magnet technology innovation is expected to support steady growth.
SmCo prices in Q1 2026 were influenced by rare earth feedstock volatility and tight samarium oxide availability. Samarium oxide is a core precursor, and China’s export controls on rare earths continued to pressure supply outside china. Higher cobalt input costs also added upward pressure on alloy prices, feeding through to finished magnet pricing.
Major players include Arnold Magnetic Technologies, Electron Energy Corporation (EEC), Ningbo Ketian Magnet Co., Ltd., VACUUMSCHMELZE GmbH (VAC), and Shin Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. These firms lead SmCo magnet manufacturing and R&D, offering high performance grades for aerospace, defense, and industrial applications with strong technical support and global distribution.
A key 2026 development was Lynas Rare Earths’ first commercial production of separated samarium oxide at its Malaysian facility in March 2026. This milestone expanded non China upstream supply, addressing a critical choke point in the SmCo value chain and enabling future diversification of magnet feedstock outside Chinese dominance.
SmCo magnets start from samarium and cobalt rare earth ores. Samarium is separated from bastnasite or monazite, then reduced to metal. Alloy production combines samarium with cobalt, which is melted, cast, sintered, and magnetized. The value chain includes mining, separation, metal production, alloying, magnet fabrication, precision machining, and end use in aerospace, defense, and industrial sectors.
A key regulatory change came under DFARS, the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement, which governs U.S. Department of Defense procurement. Under DFARS 225.7018-2, from January 1, 2027, restrictions on samarium-cobalt magnets expand to cover the full supply chain, from mining or production of cobalt and samarium ore or feedstock, including recycled material, through finished magnet production. This is important because defense suppliers must prove that SmCo magnets and inputs are not sourced from restricted countries, pushing buyers toward traceable, non-China supply chains.
Demand is strongest in aerospace, defense, renewables, and precision industrial sectors. SmCo magnets excel where high temperature stability, corrosion resistance, and demagnetization resistance are critical, including jet engines, missile systems, satellites, and industrial drives. These performance needs make SmCo indispensable in advanced engineering and mission critical applications.
Procurement Resource employs a structured methodology combining primary research, secondary market data, analytical models, and validation processes to assess SmCo magnet prices and trends. Price evaluations incorporate supply-demand dynamics, feedstock movements, trade flows, and value chain analysis, supported by continuous market monitoring to ensure accurate and reliable insights.
