Asia
In Asia, Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) prices remained under pressure throughout Q1’25 due to a combination of weak demand, ample supply, and limited downstream activity. The sluggish performance of Bisphenol A (BPA) markets, especially in China and South Korea, played a significant role in keeping TBBPA sentiment muted. BPA, a key raw material for TBBPA, faced oversupply issues as new production capacities came online in China, while post-Lunar New Year restocking efforts fell short of expectations.
Although phenol prices saw a slight increase in February due to some feedstock constraints and plant maintenance in China, this did not significantly impact overall TBBPA pricing because downstream demand from flame retardants and electronics sectors remained weak. The Ramadan season in late March also softened petrochemical trading across many Asian regions, further dampening the buying momentum.
Europe
In Europe, TBBPA prices experienced moderate fluctuations during Q1’25, influenced primarily by regulatory developments and shifting trade flows. The European Union’s proposed anti-dumping duties on epoxy resin imports from Asia had a ripple effect on regional TBBPA sentiment. These duties were expected to limit Asian epoxy resin exports, which in turn reduced BPA consumption abroad and created indirect downward pressure on brominated BPA derivatives like TBBPA. Despite this, demand from the electronics and fire-safety segments in Europe stayed somewhat steady. However, a lack of significant restocking or new project activity during the quarter meant that the market did not experience any major uplift. Stable bromine prices in the region also helped to limit volatility, though the broader market remained cautious.
North America
In North America, TBBPA pricing showed a firmer tone compared to other regions during Q1’25, largely driven by disruptions in the domestic bromine market. Severe winter storms along the Gulf Coast led to logistical delays and port shutdowns, constraining bromine supply. Simultaneously, expensive bromine imports—due to extended shipping routes and geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea—kept raw material costs elevated. This, combined with steady demand from flame retardant applications and energy storage sectors (notably zinc bromide batteries), supported TBBPA price levels. While BPA demand was soft across the region, TBBPA benefited from tighter feedstock availability and steady consumption in key industrial segments.
