  • Asian paraxylene closed at about 1,283 dollars per tonne on October 7, up 34 dollars post holiday
  • Chinese paraxylene operating rate held at about 78.6 percent on October 7 on maintenance
  • Fourth quarter PX inventory was projected to build about 50,000 tonnes
  • Chinese PTA operating rate was expected to drop to 70 to 71 percent on two East China turnarounds
  • Crude oil strength kept naphtha and xylene chain cost structures elevated into mid October

Asian xylene markets moved through the first two weeks of October 2026 with firmer tone across the paraxylene chain, as crude oil strength and Chinese cracker turnarounds kept supply tight even as polyester demand downstream remained subdued. By October 7, Asian paraxylene closed at about 1,283 United States dollars per tonne, up 34 dollars from the pre Golden Week level and up 21 dollars per tonne from the September 30 reading. The November floating spot premium traded close to 100 dollars per tonne over the benchmark at times during the week, with the December premium near 65 dollars per tonne and the November to December spread widening from 51 to 54 dollars.

Operating rate data told the supply story. Chinese paraxylene plants ran at about 78.6 percent operating rate on October 7, with Asian operating rates close to 66 percent, both lower than the September 30 reading because of scheduled maintenance across multiple complexes. Chinese purified terephthalic acid plants were set to run at about 70 to 71 percent after two East China PTA units entered maintenance, pulling PX demand slightly lower at the same time. Fourth quarter PX balances looked broadly balanced to slightly building, with analysts projecting a 50,000 tonne inventory build through the end of December.

Crude oil moves added to the cost push. Energy prices spiked earlier in October before retreating on news of higher Middle East crude exports, European strategic diesel reserve releases, and a Group of Seven coordinated reserve action. Low global crude inventories and continued Middle East risk kept Brent and West Texas Intermediate elevated through the first half of the month, supporting naphtha, mixed xylene, and paraxylene cost structures across Asia.

Downstream, PTA markets firmed on feedstock cost pass through while polyester demand stayed below seasonal expectations. Spot paraxylene and PTA values both edged higher at Asian and Western hubs between September 7 and September 11 before the holiday break, and Chinese plants returning from maintenance in late September raised regional operating rates. Polyester fiber and PET bottle resin producers in China, India, and Vietnam reported slower order books into the back half of October, with converters cautious ahead of year end restocking.

For procurement teams in polyester fiber, PET resin, synthetic fiber, and solvent supply chains, the near term action is to secure November and December paraxylene and mixed xylene coverage before further crude oil moves push base prices higher. PET bottle resin and textile fiber buyers should confirm forward volumes with Chinese and South Korean suppliers while spot premiums are still workable. Solvent and specialty chemical buyers using isomer grade xylene should stress test fourth quarter cost models against a scenario where Asian paraxylene firms toward 1,320 dollars per tonne if crude holds above 100 dollars per barrel and Chinese PX operating rates stay below 80 percent through November.
