  • Crop quality ratings declined from the preceding week.
  • Corn development remains ahead of the five-year average.
  • Seventy-six percent of the crop had reached the dough stage.
  • Buyers should monitor crop quality as harvest approaches.

US corn development continues to move toward harvest at a faster-than-normal pace in several stages, but crop condition has weakened, creating a mixed supply signal for feed manufacturers, ethanol plants and food processors. The latest crop assessment rated 60% of the corn crop in good or excellent condition, below the preceding week's level.

Corn development remains advanced. About 76% of the crop had reached the dough stage, six percentage points ahead of the five-year average. Twenty-nine percent had reached the dent stage, compared with a five-year average of 24%, while a small share had already reached maturity.

For corn procurement teams, faster crop development can support earlier harvest availability in some regions, but weaker condition ratings raise questions about final yields and grain quality. Procurement decisions should therefore consider regional crop reports rather than relying only on national development figures.

Weather conditions vary considerably across major producing states. Some areas have faced high temperatures and dryness, while others have received excessive rainfall. This uneven pattern can produce large differences in yield and quality between sourcing regions.

Feed manufacturers can respond by maintaining approved supply across several states or grain merchants. Ethanol plants and starch processors may have less flexibility because transportation distance and local basis conditions strongly influence delivered procurement costs.

Harvest timing also affects storage and logistics planning. Earlier crop development can increase grain movement into elevators and transport networks sooner than expected. Buyers should coordinate storage capacity, rail or truck availability and delivery schedules before large harvest volumes begin moving.

Quality testing will matter once new-crop grain enters commercial channels. Moisture content, test weight and damage levels can affect storage performance and processing yields, making final crop condition more important than acreage alone.

The US crop remains broadly advanced, providing support for near-term harvest availability, but declining condition ratings add uncertainty around usable output. Buyers should continue tracking state-level crop performance and actual harvest results before locking in remaining requirements.
