IBM is proposing its Foundation Model technology that extends the life of its fuel cells through optimal control of the operational parameters. The AI technology will be designed to create device-level models using the data from FuelCell Energy. The models created will learn from the pre-existing data obtained and predict the performance of the technology.

The process of learning and analyzing from the data set will then create a data-based digital twin of the fuel cell that connects the data sources and provides a greater understanding of the influence of various parameters of the fuel cell. According to Alessandro Curioni, the Vice President of IBM Research Europe, the partnership will help advance the electrochemical energy production mechanism.

Moreover, FuelCell Energy has multiple power solutions that can be beneficial when combined with AI. Its trigeneration platform is the best example; that uses different energy sources, including natural or biogas, to produce hydrogen, power, and water. It has a lower carbon footprint compared to the conventional methods.

The Chief Technology Officer at FuelCell Energy has mentioned that the company is excited to integrate with one of the greatest tech leaders in the application of AI. This collaboration focuses on developing ideas and solutions that enable a world empowered by more clean and efficient energy.

Earlier this month, the company opened a 14MW baseload fuel cell project, located in Derby. It is the second largest fuel cell park located in North America, consisting of over ten fuel cells with a supply of power to thousands of customers.

The plan electrochemically integrates fuel and air to generate power without combustion. Altogether, it enables the company to help utilities and independent power producers eliminate or reduce emissions while empowering grid reliability.
