Product Overview

The report provides a detailed analysis essential for establishing a Chlorotoluene production plant. It encompasses all critical aspects necessary for Chlorotoluene production, including the cost of Chlorotoluene production, Chlorotoluene plant cost, Chlorotoluene production costs, and the overall Chlorotoluene production plant cost. Additionally, the study covers specific expenditures associated with setting up and operating a Chlorotoluene production plant. These encompass production processes, raw material requirements, utility requirements, infrastructure needs, machinery and technology requirements, manpower requirements, packaging requirements, transportation requirements, and more.

Chlorotoluene is an aryl chloride that is utilised in several industrial applications. It is used as an important chemical intermediate and solvent in pharmaceuticals for synthesising active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). It is employed in the synthesis of anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, antifungals, and analgesics by oxidation to chlorobenzoic acids or cross-coupling.

It is utilised in the production of agrochemicals like herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, acaricides, and growth regulators that support crop protection and better yield. It is also used in the production of dyes and pigments (e.g., azo dyes), synthetic rubber additives, polymers, resins, high-performance plastics, coatings, adhesives, and personal care products.

The chlorotoluene market is driven by its strong demand from agrochemicals for herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides. Its utilisation in pharmaceuticals for APIs like anti-inflammatories and antibiotics boosts its demand. Its usage in making dyes/pigments, polymers, coatings, and personal care products makes it a popular product.

Asia-Pacific leads its production and consumption, while the North American and European markets are growing because of R&D in sustainable processes, green chemistry, and regulatory-compliant innovations. The industrial chlorotoluene procurement is affected by instability in raw material toluene prices and supply chain reliance on Asia-Pacific capacity. Also, strict regulations (REACH, TSCA), GMP certifications, logistics costs from geopolitical risks, and environmental compliance increase production expenses, which affect its sourcing.

Raw Material for Chlorotoluene Production

According to the Chlorotoluene production plant project report, the key raw materials used in the production of Chlorotoluene include Toluene-Chlorine Gas-Ferric Chloride.

Production Process of Chlorotoluene

The extensive Chlorotoluene production cost report consists of the following major industrial production process:

  1. By Chlorination: The production of Chlorotoluene involves the chlorination of toluene. In this process, toluene is combined with chlorine gas and ferric chloride in a reaction vessel maintained at around 40–50 degree Celsius. The methyl group on toluene directs chlorination predominantly to the ortho and para positions, resulting in a mixture of o-chlorotoluene and p-chlorotoluene as major products. After reaction, the mixture is subjected to fractional distillation to give the desired Chlorotoluene as the final product.

Chlorotoluene refers to a mixture of monochlorotoluene isomers (ortho, meta-, and para-chlorotoluene), with the general formula C7H7Cl and molecular weight of 126.59 g/mol. They are colourless to pale yellow liquids. Ortho-chlorotoluene has a melting point of -35.1 degree Celsius, a boiling point of 159.2 degree Celsius, density of 1.08 g/cm³. Its refractive index is ~1.523, and vapour pressure ~2.3 mmHg at 20 degree Celsius. Meta-chlorotoluene has a melting point of -48 degree Celsius and a boiling point of 162 degree Celsius, with a density of 1.072 g/cm³. Para-chlorotoluene melts at -0.4 degree Celsius, boils at 162-166 degree Celsius and has a density of 1.07 g/cm³.

All isomers are practically insoluble in water but miscible with organic solvents like ethanol, ether, acetone, and benzene, with logP values around 2.65, indicating moderate lipophilicity. They are stable under normal conditions but reactive toward strong oxidising agents, metals (e.g., aluminium, magnesium), and bases, potentially forming hazardous polymers or HCl upon hydrolysis.
