Fuel Oil Production Cost Report

Fuel Oil, also referred to as furnace oil, mainly comprises crude-oil distillation residues. It is produced using different refining processes from crude petroleum based on its purpose. Basically, it is any liquid petroleum product which is burned in a boiler or furnace in order to generate heat, power etc.

The oil appears to be yellow or light brown. It constitutes of complex and variable aliphatic blends (alkenes, alkanes, cycloalkanes) along with hydrocarbons with low percentages of compounds, including sulphur, nitrogen, and oxygen. It classifies under six different classes ranging from 1 to 6, bifurcated on the basis of their boiling points, composition, and application.

Its flash point (approximately 40 °C (104 °F)) is higher than that of kerosene and has a smell similar to it. Its boiling point varies between 175 °C to 600 °C, and its carbon chain length is 20 to 70 atoms, depending on the fuel oil number. Its viscosity also rises with the number, and Price typically lowers with the increase in fuel number.

The fuel oil demand is being driven by its primary application in steam boilers that find use in industrial plants, power plants as well as ships. In addition to that, it has usage in heating applications in households and commercial places. It also finds application as a fuel used in ships and automobiles, along with being a backup fuel in peaking power plants in case the supply of natural gas is interrupted, which furthers the market's demand. Also, it is used in electricity production, which is necessary for powering several operations.
