Its microporous structure consists of 9 billion pores per square inch, each 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet (to repel liquid) yet 700 times larger than a water vapor molecule (to allow sweat escape), with membrane thickness typically around 0.01-0.05 mm for lightweight flexibility. Chemically, ePTFE is highly inert as a fluoropolymer, offering superior resistance to hydrolysis, oxidation, UV degradation, oils, and most solvents or acids/bases. It maintains oleophobicity (oil repellency) up to certain DWR treatments. It neither absorbs water nor degrades biologically but poses environmental persistence challenges due to non-biodegradability.
