It decomposes autocatalytically at about 130 degree Celsius with oxygen evolution, while the tetrahydrate decomposes above 150 degree Celsius.

In aqueous solution, it dissociates into magnesium ions and permanganate ions, with the latter imparting strong oxidising ability by accepting electrons and reducing to manganese dioxide (MnO2), which precipitates as a brown solid. The compound's permanganate ion is tetrahedral in geometry and is responsible for the distinctive colour and reactive oxidising behaviour. Magnesium permanganate is also hygroscopic and requires careful handling and storage to maintain stability.
