Product Overview

The report provides a detailed analysis essential for establishing an oleum production plant. It encompasses all critical aspects necessary for oleum production, including the cost of oleum production, oleum plant cost, oleum production costs, and the overall oleum production plant cost. Additionally, the study covers specific expenditures associated with setting up and operating an oleum production plant. These encompass production processes, raw material requirements, utility requirements, infrastructure needs, machinery and technology requirements, manpower requirements, packaging requirements, transportation requirements, and more.

Oleum, which is also known as pyrosulfuric acid or fuming sulfuric acid belongs to the class of inorganic acids, that is majorly associated with petrochemical, dyestuffs, and chemical operations. It can be used as an ingredient in the preparation of certain chemical products, including fertilizers in the agrochemical industry. It primarily serves as a sulfonating agent in chemical reactions on a large-scale.

Oleum is a concentrated form of sulfuric acid that can be used for nitration and sulfonation reactions and is used for the production of hydrofluoric acid in the chemical industry. Moreover, it is used for commercial operations, such as nylon production or preparation of coating and dye products, including paints, printing inks, and more. The compound can also be included as a sulfonating agent in the production of explosives and petroleum products.

The market for Oleum is primarily driven by its wide-scale demand as a sulfonating acidic chemical in the petrochemical, agrochemical, and chemical industries. Its utilization as an additive for the preparation of fertilizers with sulfur content drives its demand in the agrochemical sector.

The compound is chiefly included in different chemical reactions. Its usage as a sulfonating agent in the production of other compounds, such as sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid in the chemical industry, boosts its demand. Moreover, its involvement in the preparation of petroleum-based products, including explosives, dyestuffs, and coating chemicals, amplifies its demand as a petrochemical component in the global market. These applications of Oleum as an acidic compound strengthen its demand while influencing its procurement. Hence, the variations in its demand and supply can directly govern the industrial oleum procurement across the globe.

Raw Material for Oleum Production

According to the oleum production plant project report, the key raw material for oleum production includes sulfur-oxygen-sulfur trioxide.

Manufacturing Process of Oleum

The extensive oleum production cost report consists of the major industrial production process:

  • By Contact Process: The production process of oleum comprises a chemical reaction between oxygen and sulfur. Initially, oxygen reacts with sulfur under controlled conditions that yield sulfur dioxide. It is then retreated with oxygen to give sulfur trioxide in the presence of a catalyst, to give sulfur trioxide as an intermediate. The intermediate is then hydrated using water to give sulfuric acid, which, in reaction with sulfur trioxide, gives oleum as the end product.

Oleum, or fuming sulfuric acid, is an acidic compound with the chemical formula H2SO4.SO3. It is a thick yellow-colored fluid comprising two hydrogens, seven oxygen, and two sulfur atoms, with a molecular weight of 178.15 g/mol. It is a derivative of sulfuric acid obtained by the contact process. It is a highly toxic and corrosive fluid with a characteristic odor. The compound is reactive when combined with water and results in the formation of sulfuric acid.

Its density is 1.91 g/cm3, in s standard temperature of 25 °C. It is a non-flammable acidic chemical that remains stable under normal conditions. However, it decomposes when heated at a high temperature while emitting toxic fumes of oxides of sulfur in the air. Oleum is an extremely acidic concentrated version of sulfuric acid with high corrosivity.
