The compound is hygroscopic in nature, with a boiling and melting point of 400 °C and 357 °C, respectively. It has great solubility in water and can form a strong acidic solution with oxidizing abilities.

Its density is 2.52 g/cm³ at a standard temperature of 25 °C. The compound is denser when compared to that of water and is non-flammable in nature. It undergoes decomposition when heated at a temperature of 400 °C and emits toxic, irritating fumes of disodium oxide. It is a strong oxidizer and a corrosive chemical.
