Frequently Asked Questions

Pharmaceuticals and healthcare applications account for an estimated 30-40% of ammonium iodide demand, followed by photography and photographic chemicals at 20-25%. Chemical synthesis and laboratory applications represent around 15-20%, analytical and X-ray fluorescence applications about 10-15%, while specialty uses such as solar-cell materials, iodine-based fertilizers, and other industrial applications account for the remaining 10-15%.

Ammonium iodide is produced by reacting ammonium hydroxide with hydroiodic acid under controlled conditions, followed by separation and purification. The identified equipment includes acid-resistant reactors or mixing vessels, crystallizers, centrifuges, vacuum dryers, and filtration units.

The main direct feedstocks are ammonium hydroxide and hydroiodic acid. On an indicative basis, hydroiodic acid accounts for around 75-85% of direct raw-material costs, while ammonium hydroxide contributes approximately 15-25%, reflecting the relatively high value of the iodine-containing feedstock.

Hydroiodic acid is generally the largest cost driver, followed by ammonium hydroxide and energy used for concentration and drying. Together, the two main feedstocks can account for an estimated 70-85% of variable production costs. Other factors include plant utilization, crystallization and recovery efficiency, electricity, labor, maintenance, acid-resistant equipment, packaging, quality control, waste treatment, and handling requirements.

Manufacturing facilities require appropriate controls for hydroiodic acid handling, ventilation, chemical storage, worker protection, wastewater, and solid or liquid waste management. Ammonium iodide is hygroscopic and light- and air-sensitive, and commercial safety information identifies skin and eye irritation and respiratory irritation as relevant hazards. Finished material should therefore be kept in tightly closed, dry containers and protected from light and moisture. From a sustainability perspective, plants can reduce waste through recovery and reuse of process water, improved crystallization efficiency, feedstock recovery, energy-efficient drying, and controlled treatment of iodine-containing waste streams.
