Frequently Asked Questions

The typical CAPEX range is USD 90 million to USD 220 million.
The benchmark plant capacity is 20,000 to 60,000 metric tons per year of polymer-grade bio-butadiene.
The global bio-butadiene market is valued at around USD 250-500 million. It is expected to reach about USD 500-950 million by the early 2030s, growing at a CAGR of around 7.5%-9.0%.
The main end-use segments include synthetic rubber for tire manufacturing (approximately 35–40% of demand), polybutadiene rubber and specialty elastomers (approximately 20–25% of demand), and ABS resins, SAN copolymers, and engineering plastics (approximately 15–20% of demand).
Bio-butadiene is manufactured via the catalytic conversion of bioethanol using either the Lebedev (one-step) or Ostromislensky (two-step) process with fixed-bed reactors and multifunctional heterogeneous catalysts. This is followed by quenching, solvent-based extractive separation, and distillation purification.
Key feedstocks include bioethanol, multifunctional catalyst, process steam, nitrogen, cooling water, extraction solvents like dimethylformamide, and packaging and storage materials. Bioethanol represents 60–75% of total raw-material cost.
Core process equipment, including fixed-bed catalytic reactors, feed vaporizers, quench systems, extractive distillation columns, butadiene purification columns, solvent recovery systems, and pressurized product storage, typically accounts for 55–70% of total machinery cost.
Manufacturing costs are primarily driven by bioethanol feedstock, which is the largest cost exposure. OPEX volatility is mainly caused by bioethanol price fluctuations, energy price movements, catalyst deactivation rates, and the premium or discount for certified bio-based products.
Bio-Butadiene manufacturing is concentrated in Brazil, the United States, Europe (particularly France, the Netherlands, and Germany), China, and India. Europe and North America together account for approximately 50% to 60% of global production capacity, supported by advanced bio-based chemical technologies, while Asia-Pacific contributes around 25% to 35%. Brazil represents approximately 10% to 15% of global capacity due to its abundant bioethanol feedstock and established bio-based chemical industry.
Available grades include polymer-grade bio-butadiene (>99.5% purity) and chemical-grade bio-butadiene (95–99% purity).
Manufacturing requires documented sustainability credentials, such as life-cycle assessment data and chain-of-custody documentation for certifications like ISCC PLUS or RSB. In Europe, adoption is supported by the EU Green Deal, carbon border adjustment mechanisms, and corporate sustainability reporting directives.
