Frequently Asked Questions

The estimated CAPEX range is USD 180 million to USD 360 million.
The benchmark plant capacity is 30,000 to 80,000 metric tons per year of polymer-grade bio-butanediol.
The global bio-butanediol market is currently valued at around USD 300-600 million. It is expected to reach about USD 600 million-1.1 billion by the early 2030s, growing at a CAGR of around 8.0-9.5%.
The main end-use segments include biodegradable plastics at around 45% of demand, bio-based polyurethane elastomers and foams at around 18%, bio-PBT engineering plastics at around 12%, bio-spandex at around 10%, and bio-solvents, cosmetics, and specialty applications at around 15%.
The main commercial route is direct fermentation of sugars using engineered Escherichia coli in a single aerobic fermentation step, followed by cell separation, evaporation, and multi-stage distillation. An alternative route involves fermentation to bio-succinic acid followed by catalytic hydrogenation to 1,4-butanediol over ruthenium or palladium catalysts.
The key feedstocks for Bio-butanediol production are glucose or dextrose, sugar cane juice or molasses, sugar beet syrup, engineered microbial cultures, and fermentation nutrients such as yeast extract and ammonium salts. Fermentable sugars are the primary cost component, accounting for approximately 50% to 65% of total raw material costs, while microbial cultures and fermentation media collectively represent around 15% to 25% of the overall raw material expense.
Core process equipment, including fermenters, separation units, evaporators, and distillation columns, accounts for around 60% of total machinery spend.
Production costs are mainly driven by sugar feedstock procurement, energy for sterilization and distillation, fermentation media, and skilled labor, which together represent around 70% to 85% of total production expenses. Sugar feedstock pricing is the main cause of OPEX volatility.
Bio-Butanediol manufacturing is concentrated in Italy, the United States, China, Germany, and Japan. Europe and North America together account for approximately 55% to 65% of global production capacity, supported by leading bio-based chemical producers and advanced fermentation technologies. Asia-Pacific, led by China and Japan, contributes around 30% to 40% of global capacity and continues to expand its production base to meet growing demand for sustainable chemicals.
Available grades include polymer-grade at 99.5% purity minimum, industrial-grade at 99% purity, and cosmetic and pharmaceutical grades with stricter specifications for residual solvents and heavy metals. ISCC PLUS mass-balance certified material is also available.
Manufacturing requires permits for sugar handling, fermentation operations, organic effluent discharge, and compliance with bio-based sustainability certification requirements. Other requirements include food contact compliance and strict regulations for effluent quality.
