Frequently Asked Questions

The indicative CAPEX range is USD 80 million to USD 250 million for a plant with an annual output of 25 to 100 milligrams of Cf-252.
The benchmark plant capacity is 10 to 500 milligrams per year of californium-252, measured as the total Cf-252 mass recovered per production campaign.
The global californium market is currently valued at around USD 750 million to USD 870 million, growing at a CAGR of around 5% to 6% over the forecast period.
The main end-use segments are nuclear energy (35% to 40% of demand), oil, gas, and mineral exploration (25% to 30%), security and defense (15% to 20%), medical applications (5% to 10%), and scientific research (5% to 10%). Cf-252 is used as a neutron source for reactor startup, oil-well logging, industrial analysis, security applications, and research.
Californium-252 is produced through neutron irradiation of curium targets in a high-flux research reactor, followed by shielded radiochemical processing. The irradiated material is processed in hot cells to separate and purify the desired californium isotope, which is then converted into a suitable chemical form and incorporated into a sealed neutron-source assembly. ORNL operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor and associated shielded hot-cell facilities for this work.
The primary feedstock is curium-containing target material used for irradiation in a high-flux reactor. Target preparation and availability are major cost considerations because Cf-252 production depends on specialized radioactive target materials, reactor irradiation capacity, and subsequent radiochemical processing.
Reactor and hot-cell systems together represent 50% to 70% of total capital investment. These facilities require specialized shielding, remote-handling systems, radiochemical processing equipment, radiation monitoring, ventilation, and secure material-handling infrastructure.
Major cost factors include curium target availability, access to a suitable high-flux reactor, irradiation time, hot-cell operations, radiochemical processing, radiation protection, and minimizing material losses during isotope recovery. Reactor operations, target materials, specialized processing, and radioactive waste management form major components of variable operating costs.
The United States is the dominant producer of Cf-252, with Oak Ridge National Laboratory serving as the major Western supplier. ORNL has produced milligram quantities of Cf-252 through its High Flux Isotope Reactor and Radiochemical Engineering Development Center, while production outside the United States is highly limited.
Manufacturing requires extensive nuclear and radiological safety controls, regulatory licensing, secure handling and storage of radioactive materials, radiation monitoring, and controlled hot-cell operations. Facilities must also maintain radioactive waste treatment and disposal systems, environmental monitoring, emergency preparedness, worker protection, and long-term decommissioning plans. Radioactive waste from transuranic isotope processing requires specialized management and controlled disposal.
