Frequently Asked Questions

The estimated CAPEX range is USD 10 million to USD 45 million for a plant with 2,000 to 12,000 tons per year capacity, depending on the precipitation polymerization and solvent recovery systems, drying and milling, and whether pharmaceutical grade is made.
The benchmark plant capacity is 2,000 to 12,000 tons per year of carbomer, with a mid-scale unit of about 6,000 MT/year identified as a benchmark.
The global carbomer market is anticipated to be around USD 0.8 billion to USD 1.6 billion, reaching USD 1.2 billion to USD 2.3 billion by the early 2030s, at a CAGR of 5.8% to 6.5% over the same period.
Cosmetics and personal care: about 45% to 55% of demand Pharmaceutical applications: 25% to 35% Household and industrial uses: 10% to 15% Other uses: balance of demand
Carbomer is manufactured by precipitation polymerization of acrylic acid with a small amount of crosslinker in a solvent using a free-radical initiator. The mixture is heated under an inert atmosphere at 50 to 90 degrees Celsius. The crosslinked polyacrylic acid precipitates, after which the solvent is removed and the polymer is dried and milled.
Acrylic acid is the primary feedstock, representing 75% to 85% of total raw material cost, with about 0.95 to 1.0 MT consumed per MT of carbomer. The process also uses a crosslinker such as allyl pentaerythritol or allyl sucrose at 1% to 3%, a free-radical initiator, and a solvent such as ethyl acetate or cyclohexane.
The polymerization reactor and solvent recovery and drying systems represent 45% to 55% of total carbomer plant setup cost.
Purchased acrylic acid is the main cost driver, representing approximately 60% to 72% of variable operating expenses because of its large consumption and price movements. Energy for polymerization, solvent recovery, and drying accounts for about 10% to 16% of total operating costs.
Major producing regions are North America and Europe, China, and India. North America and Europe have strong local production, China is a large and growing producer, and India is an important producer and market.
Available grades include carbomer 940, carbomer 934, and carbomer 980, along with homopolymer and copolymer grades and cosmetic- and pharmaceutical-grade products.
Carbomer manufacturing requires environmental and safety approvals, explosion-proof solvent handling, solvent recovery, wastewater treatment, and regular safety and environmental checks. Pharmaceutical grades require tighter controls and testing for residual monomer, solvents, and heavy metals.
