Frequently Asked Questions

The main end-use segments for Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) are aerospace and defence, automotive and transportation, wind energy, sports equipment, and medical applications. Aerospace and defence represent the largest demand segment, accounting for approximately 35–40% of global CFRP demand, followed by automotive and transportation at around 20–25%, wind energy at approximately 15–20%, sports equipment at 5–10%, and medical applications at about 3–5%. The remaining demand comes from construction, electronics, marine, and other industrial applications.

CFRP is manufactured by first producing carbon fibre from polyacrylonitrile (PAN), rayon, or pitch. PAN or rayon is subjected to oxidation and stabilisation, followed by carbonisation and, where required, graphitisation and surface treatment. Pitch-based fibres undergo conversion, stabilisation, carbonisation, graphitisation, and surface treatment. The resulting carbon fibres are then impregnated with a polymer resin, typically epoxy, followed by forming and curing through processes such as autoclave moulding, compression moulding, resin transfer moulding, or pultrusion.

The primary feedstocks are polyacrylonitrile (PAN), rayon, or pitch for carbon-fibre production, together with polymer resins such as epoxy, polyester, or vinyl ester for the composite matrix. Raw materials generally account for approximately 50–70% of total manufacturing OPEX, with precursor fibre and resin representing the largest material costs.

The major cost drivers are carbon-fibre precursors and polymer resins, followed by energy-intensive oxidation, carbonisation, and graphitisation processes. Other significant costs include utilities, labour, specialised processing equipment, maintenance, curing and forming operations, waste management, depreciation, quality control, environmental compliance, and logistics.

Asia-Pacific is the leading region for CFRP production and consumption, supported by strong aerospace, automotive, wind-energy, electronics, and industrial manufacturing activity. North America and Europe are also major production and consumption centres, particularly for aerospace, defence, automotive, and high-performance industrial applications. Asia-Pacific accounts for approximately 45–50% of global CFRP market demand, while North America and Europe together account for a substantial share of the remaining market.

CFRP manufacturing requires controls for emissions generated during oxidation, carbonisation, and graphitisation, along with appropriate ventilation, gas treatment, and worker-safety systems. Facilities must also manage resin-related VOC emissions, process waste, wastewater, and carbon-fibre scrap in accordance with applicable environmental regulations. Sustainability measures increasingly include energy-efficiency improvements, heat recovery, low-emission resins, recycling of carbon-fibre waste, and the use of recycled carbon fibre in suitable applications.
