Frequently Asked Questions

The main end-use segments are EDC/PVC production, water treatment, chemical manufacturing, and pulp and paper. EDC/PVC is the largest application, accounting for about 40% of global chlorine demand, while water treatment, chemicals, and other industrial uses make up the remaining demand.
Chlorine is primarily produced through the chlor-alkali process by electrolysis of brine in membrane cells. Other routes include hydrogen chloride electrolysis and the Deacon process, which oxidises HCl with oxygen over a copper-based catalyst at about 400–500 degree Celsius.
The key feedstocks are brine (salt solution), hydrogen chloride, and oxygen, with electricity being the major process input. Salt and other feedstocks generally account for about 50–70% of variable operating costs, while electricity is the dominant conversion cost.
The reaction/electrolysis section represents about 25–40% of total CAPEX, while gas handling, purification, and compression account for about 30–45%.
Electricity is the largest cost driver for electrolytic chlorine production and can account for up to 70% of chlor-alkali variable costs. Other major costs include salt/brine, utilities, gas handling, purification, maintenance, and environmental compliance.
Asia-Pacific dominates chlorine production, accounting for nearly 60% of global production, followed by North America and Europe.
Manufacturing requires strict controls for Chlorine, HCl, and NOx emissions, wastewater, brine purification sludge, and hazardous waste. Plants also require leak detection, closed handling systems, worker exposure controls, and compliance with applicable environmental and chemical-safety regulations.
