Frequently Asked Questions

The estimated CAPEX range is USD 20 million to USD 60 million for an integrated chloromethanes plant producing chloroform alongside methyl chloride, methylene chloride, and carbon tetrachloride. The investment depends on the chlorination reactor, distillation train, hydrogen chloride recovery, chlorine handling, corrosion-resistant construction, and integration with a chlor-alkali facility.
The benchmark capacity is 20,000 to 80,000 MT/year of combined chloromethanes, with chloroform as one of the principal products. A mid-scale unit consumes approximately 1.6 to 2.0 MT of chlorine and 0.13 to 0.16 MT of methane per MT of chloroform.
The global chloroform market is valued at approximately USD 700 million to USD 1.5 billion and is growing at a CAGR of around 4.0% to 4.5%. The market is forecast to reach approximately USD 1 billion to USD 2 billion by the early 2030s.
HCFC-22 and fluoropolymer feedstock account for approximately 80% to 90% of demand; pharmaceutical and laboratory solvents represent around 5% to 10%; reagents and other chemical synthesis applications account for about 3% to 5%; and other niche and legacy applications make up the remaining share.
Chloroform is manufactured through thermal chlorination of methane at approximately 400–450 degree Celsius, or through chlorination of methyl chloride produced from methanol. The process generates a mixture of chloromethanes, which is subsequently separated through fractional distillation, with hydrogen chloride recovered and recycled.
The primary feedstocks are chlorine and methane or methanol. Together, they account for approximately 60% to 75% of total raw material expense.
The chlorination reactor, multi-column distillation units, and hydrogen chloride recovery system represent approximately 45% to 55% of the total chloroform plant setup cost.
Chlorine is the largest cost driver, accounting for approximately 40% to 55% of variable operating expenses because of its consumption volume and cost. Methane or methanol is the second major feedstock cost, while energy required for reaction, distillation, and refrigeration contributes approximately 10% to 15% of OPEX.
China is the largest producer and exporter, while Asia-Pacific accounts for more than half of global consumption, led by China and India. Europe and North America also have significant production facilities.
Chloroform is a hazardous solvent and suspected carcinogen, requiring stringent controls for worker exposure, emissions, storage, and transportation. Manufacturing and handling are subject to applicable EPA, OSHA, and REACH requirements, while its use as a feedstock for HCFC-22 is also affected by Montreal Protocol controls. Emission management, containment, and appropriate registration and compliance systems are therefore important aspects of plant operation.
