Frequently Asked Questions

The indicative CAPEX range is USD 8 million to USD 80 million. Investment depends on plant scale, target purity grade, feedstock type, impurity removal requirements, and effluent treatment facilities.
Small refining units produce between 500 and 2,000 tonnes per year of contained cobalt, mid-sized plants produce between 2,000 and 10,000 tonnes per year, and larger integrated refineries produce between 10,000 and 30,000 tonnes per year.
The global cobalt hydroxide market is valued at approximately USD 190 million at the finished material level and is projected to grow at a CAGR of around 9% through 2034.
Battery precursor and cathode material supply accounts for about 65% of demand; conversion to cobalt sulfate and cobalt oxide accounts for about 15%; catalysts account for about 10%; pigments, driers, and ceramics account for about 6%; and research, alloy, and other specialty uses account for the remaining 4%.
The process generally involves leaching and purification of cobalt-bearing feedstock to produce a cobalt salt solution, followed by impurity removal and precipitation with an alkaline reagent such as sodium hydroxide. The resulting cobalt hydroxide slurry is separated, washed, dried, and milled or classified to obtain the required product grade.
Key feedstocks include cobalt sulfate, cobalt chloride, crude cobalt hydroxide, or mixed hydroxide precipitate. Cobalt feedstock typically represents 70% to 85% of total manufacturing costs, depending on feedstock grade, cobalt content, and market prices.
Leaching reactors, purification and solvent extraction units, precipitation tanks, solid-liquid separation equipment, dryers, and material-handling systems make up nearly 50% of machinery costs. Effluent treatment and emission-control systems also contribute to the overall equipment investment.
The cost of cobalt feedstock is the largest cost factor, often representing 70% to 85% of total manufacturing costs. Other major costs include sodium hydroxide and other process chemicals, electricity, water, labor, drying, equipment maintenance, product losses, and wastewater treatment.
Asia Pacific, led by China, is the largest refining base and processes a major share of global cobalt supply. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the main source of crude cobalt hydroxide and other cobalt-bearing intermediates used by refineries.
Product forms include crude intermediate material containing around 30% cobalt and refined powder grades, including battery-grade material. Key specifications include cobalt content, nickel and copper impurities, moisture, sulfur content, particle size, and physical morphology.
Manufacturing requires wastewater treatment, air and water monitoring, hazardous material controls, and compliance with environmental regulations. Sustainability measures include controlling dust and chemical emissions, treating process wastewater, managing solid residues, recovering process chemicals where possible, and maintaining responsible sourcing and supply-chain traceability.
