Frequently Asked Questions

The CAPEX range is USD 50 million to USD 500 million, depending on plant capacity, ore type, feedstock quality, and the selected refining route.
The benchmark plant capacity is 3,000 to 15,000 metric tons per year of refined cobalt.
The global cobalt market is currently valued at approximately USD 9 billion to USD 16 billion and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5% to 5.5% through 2034.
Main end-use segments include battery manufacturing, which accounts for approximately 55% to 60% of demand; superalloys for aerospace and power generation, around 15%; hard metals and cutting tools, around 10%; and catalysts, pigments, magnets, and other applications, around 15% to 20%.
The dominant commercial route involves crushing and preparing cobalt-bearing ore or concentrate, followed by acid leaching, solid-liquid separation, impurity removal, solvent extraction or other purification, and electrowinning to produce refined cobalt metal. An alternative route uses pyrometallurgical smelting to produce cobalt-bearing matte or alloy, followed by hydrometallurgical refining.
Key feedstocks include copper-cobalt sulfide or oxide concentrates and cobalt hydroxide intermediates. Feedstock typically accounts for 55% to 70% of total raw material spending, with cost affected by cobalt grade, impurities, recovery rate, and purchase price.
Core process equipment, including leaching tanks, solid-liquid separation systems, solvent extraction units, purification equipment, and electrowinning cells, accounts for approximately 50% to 60% of total machinery spend.
Manufacturing costs are primarily driven by cobalt-bearing feedstock, sulfuric acid and other process chemicals, electricity, fuel, labor, and wastewater and residue treatment. Raw materials, chemicals, and energy generally account for around 70% to 85% of total manufacturing costs.
The Democratic Republic of Congo accounts for approximately 73% of global mined cobalt output, while China dominates refined cobalt production with about 79% of global refined output. Indonesia is also a major mining region, contributing around 14% of mined cobalt output.
Available specifications include standard cobalt with approximately 99.8% purity and high-purity cobalt with approximately 99.95% purity. Battery, aerospace, and specialty applications may require tighter limits for impurities such as iron, nickel, copper, lead, and sulfur.
Manufacturing requires environmental permits for acid handling, wastewater treatment, emissions, and hazardous material management. Sustainability requirements include controlling acid mist and other emissions, treating acidic wastewater, managing solid leach residues, recovering process chemicals where possible, maintaining worker safety, and ensuring responsible sourcing and supply-chain traceability.
