Frequently Asked Questions

The main end-use segments for copper are electrical and electronics (approximately 45% to 50% of demand), plumbing and construction (20% to 25%), automotive and transportation (12% to 15%), and industrial machinery and equipment (10% to 15%). Renewable energy, consumer products, and other applications account for the remaining demand.

For copper sulfide ores, the process involves crushing, grinding, froth flotation, thickening, and filtration to obtain copper concentrate containing around 25% to 30% copper. The concentrate is then smelted to produce copper matte, converted into blister copper, and refined electrolytically to achieve approximately 99.99% purity. For copper oxide ores, the ore is crushed and ground, leached with an acidic solution, and the resulting copper-bearing solution is processed through solvent extraction and electrowinning to produce high-purity copper.

For production from copper sulfide ores, the process generally uses copper concentrate containing around 25% to 30% copper. Copper-bearing feedstock is the largest raw material cost and can account for approximately 70% to 85% of total production costs, depending on ore grade, treatment charges, recovery rates, and copper prices.

Manufacturing costs are influenced by copper concentrate or ore prices, electricity, fuel, skilled labor, chemical reagents, equipment maintenance, transportation, recovery rates, and regulatory compliance. Raw material costs generally represent the largest share, while energy consumption is particularly important for smelting, refining, and electrowinning operations.

Asia Pacific is the leading copper-producing and refining region, with China accounting for approximately 45% of global refined copper production. Chile, Japan, Russia, and the United States are also major refined copper producers, with individual shares of about 6%, 5%, 4%, and 3%, respectively.

Copper can be produced at approximately 99.99% purity through electrolytic refining or solvent extraction and electrowinning. Common refined products include cathode copper meeting high-purity specifications, while oxygen-free and high-conductivity copper grades are used for applications requiring high electrical conductivity and low impurity levels.
