Frequently Asked Questions

The main segments are sweeteners, feed & nutrition, industrial & chemicals, biofuels, and food ingredients. Animal feed accounts for about 43% of global maize demand, while food processing, biofuels and industrial uses make up the remainder.

In wet milling, corn is steeped in a solution of water and sulfur dioxide at elevated temperatures for 24 to 40 hours, ground into a slurry, and separated via mechanical steps like hydrocyclones and centrifuges into corn oil, starch, syrup, and gluten. In dry milling, corn is cleaned, de-germinated, ground, and purified via sifting and air classification to produce flour or meal.

The main raw material is maize grain, generally Yellow Dent corn, with water and sulfur dioxide used particularly in wet milling. Maize is the largest cost component. It accounts for roughly 70-85% of total manufacturing costs, depending on product mix, corn prices and plant efficiency.

Maize prices are the primary cost driver, while energy is a major secondary expense, particularly for wet milling because the process requires substantial heating, separation, evaporation and drying. Energy has historically been identified as the second-largest operating cost after corn for US wet millers.

Asia-Pacific is the leading region, accounting for approximately 37.5% of the global corn deep-processing market, followed by North America at about 34.8% and Europe at around 16.9%. Asia-Pacific's position is supported by its large processing base and growing demand for food, feed and value-added corn products.
