Frequently Asked Questions

The estimated CAPEX range is USD 60 million to USD 180 million.
The benchmark plant capacity is 30,000 to 100,000 MT per year.
The global market is estimated at approximately USD 1.2 billion to USD 1.8 billion at the finished material level, with a projected CAGR of around 6.0% to 8.0% through 2033.
Lithium-ion battery electrolyte solvent accounts for 40.0% to 45.0% of demand; polycarbonate resin synthesis accounts for 35-38%; solvent, coatings, and methylating agent applications account for 12 to 15%; and pharmaceutical intermediate, fuel additive, and laboratory applications account for 5 to 8%.
The process follows a two-step propylene oxide carbonation to propylene carbonate, followed by base-catalyzed transesterification with methanol in a reactive distillation column. Urea methanolysis and methanol oxidative carbonylation are used as alternate routes.
Key feedstocks include propylene oxide, methanol, and carbon dioxide. Propylene oxide and methanol procurement together represent 60 to 75% of total raw material cost.
The carbonation reactor system and the reactive distillation train represent 40 to 50% of the total dimethyl carbonate plant setup cost.
The cost of purchased propylene oxide is a major driver, representing approximately 35 to 45% of variable operating expenses.
Dimethyl Carbonate manufacturing is dominated by Asia-Pacific, particularly China (Shandong, Jiangsu), which accounts for approximately 60-70% of global production capacity. Other key producing regions include Japan, Europe (notably Germany), and North America, which collectively hold the remaining 30-40% of global capacity.
Battery-grade dimethyl carbonate is available at above 99.9% purity with very low moisture and HF content.
Manufacturing requires permits to handle flammable methanol and pressurized carbon dioxide, as well as compliance audits to meet environmental and regulatory obligations.
