Frequently Asked Questions

The main end-use segments for DSBP are fluorescent whitening agents for detergents and textiles, paper and pulp applications, electronics and organic optoelectronic materials, photovoltaics, cosmetics, and chemical intermediates. DSBP (4,4-Distyryl Biphenyl Derivative) demand is primarily driven by fluorescent whitening agents for detergents and textiles (50-60%), followed by paper and pulp applications (20-25%), electronics and optoelectronic materials including photovoltaics (10-15%), and cosmetics, chemical intermediates, and other specialty applications (5-10%).
DSBP is manufactured through a multi-stage synthesis starting with the reaction of biphenyl with hydrogen chloride and formaldehyde to produce 4,4'-bis(chloromethyl)biphenyl. This intermediate is reacted with trimethylphosphite to form 4,4'-bis(dimethoxyphosphonomethyl)biphenyl, which is subsequently reacted with two molecules of benzaldehyde-2-sulphonic acid to produce DSBP.
The key feedstocks and process raw materials are biphenyl, hydrogen chloride, formaldehyde, trimethylphosphite, and benzaldehyde-2-sulphonic acid. Biphenyl is the principal starting raw material, while formaldehyde and the phosphonate and sulfonated aromatic intermediates contribute significantly to the overall variable cost.
Raw-material procurement is the principal cost driver, particularly biphenyl and formaldehyde, followed by trimethylphosphite and benzaldehyde-2-sulphonic acid. Energy consumption, labour, equipment maintenance, utilities, purification, and waste-treatment requirements also affect manufacturing costs.
DSBP, also known as Tinopal® CBS-X or disodium 4,4'-bis(2-sulfostyryl)biphenyl, is available in physical forms including dry powder, liquid, pellets, and large crystals. Commercial DSBP grades are supplied for applications including laundry detergents, industrial detergents, textile whitening, and specialty optical-brightening uses.
