Frequently Asked Questions

Automotive applications are the largest end-use segment, accounting for about 43.1% of global EPDM revenue. Other major applications include building and construction, electrical and electronics, industrial products, and lubricant additives. Automotive uses include weather seals, gaskets, hoses, wire insulation, and other sealing components.
EPDM is produced by polymerizing ethylene, propylene, and a diene, commonly ethylidene norbornene (ENB), using controlled polymerization technology. Depending on the production route, solution or suspension polymerization can be used. The polymer is then separated from the reaction medium, finished, dried, and formed into commercial rubber grades.
The principal feedstocks are ethylene, propylene, and ENB. A current production benchmark uses approximately 0.515 tonnes of ethylene, 0.453 tonnes of propylene, and 0.062 tonnes of ENB to produce one tonne of EPDM rubber. Raw materials account for approximately 70–80% of operating expenditure, making them the dominant cost component.
Feedstock costs are the primary driver, particularly ethylene, propylene, and ENB, whose prices are influenced by petrochemical and energy markets. Ethylene alone can account for about 70–80% of operating expenditure. Utilities, including electricity, heating, cooling, and drying, are also significant, at roughly 15–20% of OpEx, along with labor, maintenance, packaging, and logistics.
Asia-Pacific is the leading EPDM market, accounting for approximately 42.9% of global revenue. China leads the regional market, while Japan, South Korea, India, and other Asian manufacturing centers are also important. North America and Europe remain significant production and consumption regions.
EPDM is commonly supplied as solid rubber in bales, pellets, or other processed forms for compounding. Grades vary by ethylene/propylene ratio, diene content, molecular weight, oil extension, and curing system. Commercial grades can be formulated for sulfur or peroxide curing and tailored for seals, hoses, roofing, cable insulation, and other applications.
