Frequently Asked Questions

The main end-use segments for Ethanol are fuel, alcoholic beverages, pharmaceuticals and laboratories, chemicals, personal care, and industrial applications. Fuel is the dominant application, while non-fuel uses such as liquor, pharmaceuticals, and laboratories account for approximately 18.7% of ethanol demand in India.
Ethanol is produced through two principal routes: synthetic hydration of ethylene with steam over an acidic catalyst, followed by purification; and fermentation of carbohydrate-rich feedstocks such as sugarcane, maize, rice, and other grains, followed by distillation and dehydration to achieve the required purity. Fermentation is generally conducted under anaerobic conditions at approximately 25 to 35 degree Celsius.
The key feedstocks are ethylene for the synthetic route and sugarcane, molasses, maize, rice, and other grains for fermentation-based production. Feedstock typically accounts for approximately 60–75% of total ethanol manufacturing cost, making it the largest cost component.
The major cost drivers are feedstock prices, energy consumption for fermentation, distillation and dehydration, utilities such as steam and electricity, labour, chemicals and enzymes, transportation, maintenance, and environmental compliance. Feedstock cost is generally the largest determinant, while energy consumption is also a significant cost driver.
