Frequently Asked Questions

The main end-use segments for Ethyl Acetate are paints and coatings, printing inks, adhesives and sealants, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and other applications. In 2026, paints and coatings account for approximately 57.8% of demand, printing inks 14.8%, adhesives and sealants 12.3%, pharmaceuticals 8.0%, food and beverage 4.1%, and other applications 3.0%.
Ethyl Acetate is manufactured through three principal routes: the Tishchenko reaction of acetaldehyde; Fischer esterification of ethanol with acetic acid using an acid catalyst; and dehydrogenation of ethanol using copper or copper chromite catalysts. In the dehydrogenation route, the process operates at approximately 200–260 degree Celsius and 10–30 bar, followed by separation and purification through distillation.
The key feedstocks are acetaldehyde for the Tishchenko route, ethanol and acetic acid for Fischer esterification, and ethanol for the dehydrogenation route. For the conventional ethanol-acetic acid route, ethanol and acetic acid together account for approximately 85.7% of total production cost.
The core reaction and purification equipment, particularly the reactor/reactive-distillation unit and distillation column, can account for approximately 64% of total bare-module equipment cost. In a conventional ethyl acetate process design, the reactive-distillation column represented 38.2% and the distillation column 25.5%, giving a combined share of 63.7%.
The major manufacturing cost drivers are ethanol and acetic acid prices, followed by energy consumption for reaction, distillation and purification, plant operating rates, maintenance, transportation, and environmental and safety requirements.
