Frequently Asked Questions

Ethylenediamine Tetraacetic Acid (EDTA) is mainly used in water treatment (25–30%), detergents and cleaners (20–25%), pulp and paper (15–20%), personal care and cosmetics (10–15%), food and beverages (5–10%), and agriculture (5–10%). Water treatment and detergents/cleaners are the largest end-use segments, together accounting for nearly half of global EDTA demand.
EDTA is produced through the Strecker synthesis by reacting ethylenediamine, formaldehyde, and a cyanide source to form an EDTA sodium salt intermediate. The intermediate is then acidified with sulfuric acid to precipitate EDTA, followed by filtration, washing, and drying.
The primary feedstocks are ethylenediamine, formaldehyde, and sodium cyanide. These constitute the principal raw-material inputs, with their combined contribution to production cost varying according to feedstock prices and process efficiency.
The main cost drivers are ethylenediamine, formaldehyde, and cyanide-based feedstocks, followed by energy, utilities, labour, maintenance, purification, and wastewater treatment. Feedstock price volatility has a direct impact on production costs.
Asia-Pacific dominates EDTA manufacturing, led by China and India. China has approximately 320,000 metric tons per annum of EDTA production capacity, with output of about 268,000 metric tons and an operating rate of 83.7%.
EDTA is available in industrial, agricultural, food, pharmaceutical, and high-purity grades. Disodium EDTA meeting USP, EP, BP, JP, and FCC specifications commonly has an assay of 99.0–101.0% on a dried basis, while EP/BP specifications allow 98.5–101.0%.
Manufacturing requires stringent controls for toxic and hazardous chemicals, particularly cyanide-containing materials, together with wastewater treatment and safe handling of process residues. Food-grade disodium EDTA is subject to prescribed purity and permitted-use requirements; current U.S. regulations specify a minimum 99% disodium EDTA dihydrate for designated food applications.
