Frequently Asked Questions

Fast Green FCF is primarily used in food and beverages (50–60%), followed by medical and histology applications (20–25%), pharmaceuticals (10–15%), and personal care and cosmetics (5–10%). Food and beverage applications represent the largest share of demand due to its use as a certified color additive.
Fast Green FCF is manufactured through acid-catalysed condensation of one molecule of 2-formyl-5-hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid with two molecules of 3-[(N-ethyl-N-phenylamino)methyl]benzenesulfonic acid and its isomers to form a leuco base. The leuco base is subsequently oxidised to form the dye, which is purified and isolated as the disodium salt.
The key feedstocks are 2-formyl-5-hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid and 3-[(N-ethyl-N-phenylamino)methyl]benzenesulfonic acid and its isomers. These are the principal organic raw-material inputs, with their cost contribution depending on procurement prices and process yield.
The major cost drivers are the prices and availability of the principal organic feedstocks, followed by oxidation and purification requirements, utilities, labour, equipment maintenance, and wastewater and emission treatment. Raw-material procurement and waste-management costs are particularly important in synthetic dye production.
Fast Green FCF is available in food-grade, pharmaceutical/cosmetic, and laboratory or certified grades. Food-grade material generally requires a minimum total dye content of 85%, while certified laboratory products can have dye strength above 95% on a dry-weight basis.
Food-grade Fast Green FCF is subject to applicable food-colour regulations, purity requirements, permitted-use limits, and contaminant specifications. Manufacturing facilities require emission-control systems and effluent treatment for wastewater generated during synthesis, purification, and dye handling. Certain specifications also include controls on dye content, water-insoluble matter, subsidiary dyes, heavy metals, and other impurities.
