Frequently Asked Questions

Building and construction is the largest end-use segment, accounting for about 74.5% of the global float glass market. Automotive accounts for approximately 17.5%, while solar glass represents about 8.0%. Furniture, electronics, decorative, and other specialty uses form smaller application segments.

Float glass is produced by batching and mixing silica sand, soda ash, limestone, dolomite, and other additives, followed by melting at about 1,500–1,600 degree Celsius. The molten glass then flows onto a bath of molten tin, where it forms a flat, uniform ribbon. The ribbon is gradually cooled in an annealing lehr, then cut, inspected, and finished.

The main inputs are silica sand, soda ash, limestone, dolomite, alumina, and other refining or coloring additives, together with recycled glass, or cullet. Raw materials generally account for about 30–40% of operating expenditure, with silica sand and soda ash among the key material cost drivers.

Common downstream formats include annealed, heat-strengthened, toughened (tempered), and laminated glass. Float glass is also supplied as clear, tinted, coated, reflective, low-emissivity, and other processed formats depending on the application. Annealed glass is the basic float product, while heat treatment and lamination provide higher strength or safety performance.

Float glass is highly recyclable, and cullet can be returned to the batch to reduce virgin raw-material use and melting energy. Recycled content is not governed by one universal percentage and varies by product, plant, and jurisdiction. In India, transparent float glass must comply with IS 14900:2018 under the applicable Quality Control Order and carry the BIS Standard Mark; other markets apply their own product, building, environmental, and recycling requirements.
