Frequently Asked Questions

The indicative CAPEX is USD 5 million to USD 40 million for a facility producing around 5 to 50 metric tons of single-crystal GaP wafers per year. The investment depends on crystal growth furnace configuration, high-pressure vessels, wafer processing capacity, cleanroom infrastructure, quality control facilities, and production setup.
A typical plant produces 5 to 50 metric tons of GaP single-crystal wafers per year. A mid-scale facility generally produces 10 to 20 metric tons annually using 2-inch and 3-inch wafers for LED substrates and optoelectronic applications.
The global gallium phosphide wafer market is valued at around USD 500 million and is projected to reach approximately USD 1.2 billion by the early 2030s, growing at a CAGR of about 10.5%.
LEDs account for approximately 55% to 60% of demand, optoelectronic devices for 15% to 20%, solar cells for 10% to 12%, and nonlinear photonics and integrated optics for 5% to 8%.
High-purity gallium metal and red phosphorus are reacted in a sealed quartz ampoule at about 1,050 degree Celsius to produce polycrystalline GaP. The material is then melted in a high-pressure Czochralski furnace at around 1,500 degree Celsius under boric oxide and argon, and a seed crystal is pulled to grow a single-crystal ingot. The ingot is then sliced, lapped, chemically and mechanically polished, and prepared for epitaxial processing. The process starts from refined elemental materials rather than ore or concentrate.
The main feedstocks are high-purity gallium metal and red phosphorus. Gallium metal with 6N to 7N purity accounts for approximately 40% to 50% of raw material costs, while 6N-grade red phosphorus accounts for around 15% to 20%.
Core process equipment, including GaP synthesis vessels, high-pressure LEC furnaces, and wafer processing systems, accounts for approximately 50% to 60% of total capital investment.
High-purity gallium and phosphorus are the main cost drivers, together accounting for approximately 55% to 70% of variable operating expenses. Gallium prices have a major effect on production economics, while furnace energy, cleanroom HVAC, labor, PBN crucibles, boric oxide, polishing materials, and diamond wire also contribute to costs.
China is the leading region in the gallium phosphide supply chain, supported by its dominant gallium supply and compound-semiconductor manufacturing base. China accounts for around 98–99% of global primary gallium production, while Japan, the United States, and Europe remain important downstream GaP manufacturing and technology centres. Reliable country-level shares for GaP output are not publicly available.
Gallium feedstock is available in 6N purity at 99.9999% and 7N purity at 99.99999%. GaP products include n-type wafers doped with sulfur or tellurium, p-type wafers doped with zinc, standard LED-grade wafers, epi-ready wafers, and undoped research-grade wafers.
Plants require permits for hazardous material handling and must comply with chemical storage, worker safety, air-emission, and wastewater requirements. Process wastewater may require treatment for metals and other contaminants, while exhaust systems may need scrubbing or other controls for hazardous gases and vapours. Chemical and solid waste must be collected and disposed of through approved facilities. Export controls may also apply to gallium supplied from producing countries.
